DESCRIPTION: Approximate 5mm in length. A small cheery oval-shaped ladybird with an orange elytra that sports 14 to 16 white to cream spots. The pronotum usually covers the head and shows orange colored spots. The pronotum and elytra both show transparent edging. The legs and antennae are orange throughout. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to light. Overwinters nestled in the leaf litter or below bark whilst and during the summer months they like to feast on mildew in the canopy, especially on Sycamores. DISTRIBUTION: Widespread and common throughout England and Wales but more uncommon in Scotland. HABITAT: Parkland, woodland, gardens and hedgerows. PERIOD: Can be seen all year round but April to October are the best times to see this delightful insect. |
